It sells if you know how
Intelligent Investor, December 16, 1998
Spotting the entrepreneurial diamonds in the dust doesn’t cost. It just takes vision.
Most of us want to be our own bosses, but there are very few who actually can. Take, for instance, mapping, or geographical information systems, as it is called in these techno-times. Did you know that if you, or someone else, has the minute details of the location of your home, block, street, and the city you live in, you could be sitting on a goldmine? That’s precisely what Rakesh and Rashmi Verma have done. Theirs is the typical enterprise success story. Bright young folks. Went to the US to study and work. Got married. Did well professionally (Rakesh was in the first Saturn Project team at General Motors, and Rashmi worked at IBM). Decided to come back to India and start afresh. Together they founded CE Info Systems, and with the help of software friends launched Mappls, a spatial software package. For Hughes Ispat, which recently launched basic services in Maharashtra, this was a boon. Crucial information-how many telephones plug points are in each building, where cable are laid, the switching box closest to a subscriber’s residence-is now a mouse-click away. The Chennai police is also impressed by Mappls. Using mobile transmitters, they can now pin down a criminal’s movements. They can also use the application to manage traffic flow. Corporates like Nestle and Coca-Cola are using Verma’s product for determining the exact movement of their goods vehicles. And it’s only a matter of time before cable TV firms and Internet service providers also start using this application...

Big Business in Digital Maps
The Times of India, November 29, 1998
With telecom and other companies going in for digital maps to reach customers, there could be  new opportunities for software providers... A small software company is snapping up big accounts by providing its clients an integrated digital map and data of addresses down to the street-level in an area.  After helping companies like Coca-Cola and Nestle chalk out logistics and distribution strategies, CE Info Systems is negotiating with telecom companies to enable them handle customer requests within minutes against days and weeks taken by conventional methods....

Geographical Information Systems: New tools for business

CE launches interactive, graphical sales software

Plotting for Control
Business Standard
As its business grows, CE sees it as challenge to customize its packages for different industries, says Verma. The challenge lies in giving the client the exact mix of tools that it requires.  For instance, Coke’s demand pattern changes with the change in seasons and it needs tools that can help plan according to cyclic peak periods. So we have customized our package to meet these specific requirements...
